AZ GRVL Championship Clarification

The AZ GRVL Championship is the official championship designation of the AZ GRVL SERIES and is awarded based on cumulative results across the series by distance and age group.

Gravel racing does not have a governing body that designates state-level championships. As such, championship titles are defined by individual series or event organizers.

Beginning in 2026, Borderlands Gravel will no longer be included in the AZ GRVL SERIES and will operate independently. The AZ GRVL SERIES will continue to recognize and award its championship titles based solely on series criteria.

The AZ GRVL SERIES was built to reflect the full spectrum of Arizona gravel athletes. Our championship structure recognizes adaptive athletes, multiple race distances, age-group competitors, and riders who commit to a season—not just a single day. We believe championships should reward consistency, access, and participation across the state, not exclude athletes based on format, distance, or circumstance.

AZ GRVL SERIES Clarifies Arizona Gravel Championship Designation

Flagstaff, AZ — The AZ GRVL SERIES is issuing a formal clarification following a recent announcement by Borderlands Gravel identifying its event as the “Arizona Gravel Championship.”

The AZ GRVL SERIES was not consulted or notified prior to this announcement. There is currently no governing or sanctioning body that designates state-level gravel championships in the United States, and as such, championship titles in gravel racing are defined by the organizing series or event.

The AZ GRVL SERIES Championship has always been a series-based title, awarded through cumulative performance across multiple events, distances, and age groups throughout Arizona.

Effective 2026, Borderlands Gravel will no longer be included in the AZ GRVL SERIES and will operate independently.

The AZ GRVL SERIES is built on accessibility and season-long participation. A single-day, single-event championship format excludes many Arizona athletes, including adaptive riders, athletes racing shorter and intermediate distances, masters competitors, and those unable to travel or commit to a one-day title race.

The AZ GRVL Championship designation remains exclusively with the AZ GRVL SERIES and will continue to be awarded based on published series criteria.
